How to Style Your Bed
If you wonder how to make your bed look luxurious, layering is key. I like to start with a great duvet. If you have one already or want to know how to make your own bespoke version here, that’s where to begin. I show you how to layer your bed like a pro. Although this video highlights bedding ideas for king size beds, my ideas translate to all size beds. They are completely scalable for your situation. It doesn’t matter the size of the room, either. Layering bedding ideas (like this) have bigger impact the smaller the space! I love oversize items that bring your eye to the ceiling and walls, making your space look even bigger.
Let’s back up just a little bit though. In a previous video I demonstrate how to modify an existing bed to fit my guest room perfectly. If you want to know how to make your queen size bed into a king size bed, please watch here first. Secondly, if you want to know about hotel bed making, try viewing this video for a perfect night’s sleep. I have a few ideas that make your existing bed more luxurious to sleep on. Seriously, it makes for the best sleep on your existing mattress! Luxury bedding ideas are just a view away…
Hotel Bedding at Home
It is so nice to stay at a luxury hotel but it’s better to have the same experience in your own home. Hotel bed design can be bought to your home by breaking down the visual. A wonderful headboard is the first thing to focus on in any hotel bedroom. I make my headboard the most important focal point of this space by making it look even bigger than it is. How do I do this? I draw your eye up to the ceiling by hanging a lovely pair of drapes behind the headboard. This gives the illusion of a much taller ceiling and wider walls. It also gives the illusion that there’s a window behind the bed, which makes the room feel more open and larger.
Many luxury hotel rooms give you great hotel bedding ideas. Perfect hotel bedroom design makes the space appear larger and more spacious than it really is. The more you stretch the space visually, the better the design is. Most notable is taking the bed wall treatment all the way to ceiling. That means by purchasing ready made drapes (at almost any length) or making drapes (if you are so skilled), you mount them as high up the wall to accommodate a nice topper valance. It then becomes an extension of the bedding design and allows for even more layering. As before, the emphasis for success at home is layering.
What do you need for the perfect bed design?
Once you have the perfect duvet cover, comforter or bedspread, it’s time to think about the items that you place on top of it. That means pillow talk (hahaha). Not only is my duvet cover long enough to accommodate four king size bed pillows to tuck underneath it, I love to use European shams on top of it. Usually a European sham is 25 inches by 25 inches wide, for a perfect square. A large square pillow filled with luxurious down filling allows for two things; having fluffy pillows on top of the bed and having pillows that take up a lot of space. Overstuffed items ooze with luxury. They’re truly over the top!
Next, concentrate on the pretty things. Decorative throw pillows, shams and throws are like the icing on the cake. These are the items to spend the most money on. Focus on the most luxurious fabrics you can afford. This is the area where you purchase (or make) items out of silk, velvet, linen and fur. The pillows have to have incredible texture, patterns and trim. In my case, I have an animal print, a large floral, a geometric silk, a plain silk, a suede, a medium pattern satin and a plain satin for visual interest. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. The easiest way to do this is to stay in a monochromatic color scheme but if you’re great with color, do your best to coordinate with one main color. That is your recipe for color matching success.
